Key Syrian Border Crossings Reopen

A key border crossing between Syria and Jordan opened Monday for the first time in three years.

The Naseeb crossing is important for overland trade in the region, including for Syria's neighbor Lebanon.

Rebels opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad seized the crossing in 2015, but government forces recaptured the area in July.

Another crossing shut down by the seven-year conflict also opened Monday between Syria and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The Quneitra crossing had been closed for four years. It is used primarily by United Nations peacekeepers maintaining a 1974 cease-fire between Syria and Israel.

The opening of the border crossings is a positive step for Assad's government in its effort to reclaim territory it had lost to rebels during the conflict that began in 2011.
